Police Say They Haven’t Received Court Order on Tinted Glass Permits
The Nigeria Police Force said it has not yet been served any official court order stopping it from enforcing the law on tinted glass permits.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The reaction came after reports spread that a Federal High Court in Abuja had ruled against the continued demand for permits from car owners using vehicles with tinted windows. Many Nigerians celebrated online, thinking the ruling had ended years of police checks and arrests linked to tinted glass.
But the police said on Thursday that they are still waiting for a formal copy of the judgment before making any changes.
Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi told reporters in Abuja that the police operate strictly on law and documented directives, not just on news reports.
“We have not received any order from the court on this issue. Until such order is properly served on the Inspector-General of Police, we will continue to act based on the law that empowers us to regulate the use of tinted glass,” Adejobi said.
He stressed that the police do not work with speculation. “Court orders are not implemented by social media. We work only when a certified copy of the judgment is brought to us. That has not happened yet,” he added.
Background of the dispute
The rule on tinted glass has been in force for more than a decade. It was introduced to control criminal activities such as kidnapping, robbery, and the movement of illegal arms, which became harder to trace when vehicles were covered with dark glasses.
Under the regulation, anyone using tinted glass had to apply for a permit through the police. However, the process was criticized for being slow, unclear, and prone to abuse. Many drivers complained that officers used it as an excuse to harass road users and demand bribes.
Human rights groups and some lawyers took the matter to court, arguing that the police had no right to restrict the use of factory-fitted tinted windows. They said the requirement violated citizens’ freedom of movement and fair use of their property.
Earlier this week, a Federal High Court judge reportedly agreed, declaring that the police had no legal basis to continue issuing permits. The judgment immediately went viral on social media, with many Nigerians calling it a “victory for road users.”
Police stand firm
Despite the public excitement, the police insist they are bound by procedure. Adejobi explained that the Force Legal Department must first study the judgment and then guide the Inspector-General on the next step.
He also reminded the public that until that process is complete, officers on duty will continue enforcing existing laws.
“We are a law-abiding institution. Once the court order is duly served, we will review it and comply. But until then, the public should not misinterpret the situation,” the spokesperson said.
Public reaction
The uncertainty has created mixed feelings among Nigerians. Some drivers say they will continue to avoid tinted glass until the situation is clear. Others insist that the court ruling has already freed them from police harassment.
Civil society groups are urging the police to act quickly and communicate clearly to avoid confusion. A lawyer in Abuja, Chinedu Eze, said that legal processes should not drag on while ordinary citizens suffer at checkpoints.
“The judgment is in the public domain. The police should not wait too long before adjusting. Otherwise, people will keep clashing with officers on the road,” Eze said.
What comes next
For now, the future of tinted glass regulation in Nigeria remains uncertain. The police are standing by their position that no official order has reached them. Lawyers, activists, and car owners are waiting to see how soon the judgment will be served and whether the Force will appeal.
Until then, many drivers may continue to face stop-and-check operations on major highways, as the long debate over tinted windows drags on.
