From Fear to Faith: Iraqi Christian Children Celebrate Communion After ISIS Defeat
Mosul, Iraq — A decade after the Islamic State (ISIS) tried to erase Christianity from northern Iraq, Christian children in Mosul are once again celebrating their faith openly. This month, young boys and girls dressed in white gathered inside local churches to receive their First Holy Communion, a powerful sign of survival and hope.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In 2014, ISIS launched a violent campaign in Mosul and the Nineveh Plains. Militants forced Christians to leave their homes, destroyed churches, and threatened death if they did not convert to Islam. Thousands fled, and for years, many feared the Christian faith would disappear from the region.
But today, the picture is very different. The Islamic State has been defeated, and families are returning. The children of survivors are growing up in the same churches that were once left in ruins. With songs, prayers, and smiling faces, they are showing the world that Christianity in Iraq has not only survived but is being reborn.
“The children receiving communion today are proof that faith is stronger than fear,” said Father Yousef, a local priest in Mosul. “Ten years ago, we saw destruction and despair. Now, we see life.”
Parents in the community said the day was deeply emotional. Many remember carrying their children as babies while escaping violence years ago. To now see them celebrating communion inside restored churches feels like a miracle.
“This is our answer to ISIS,” said Mariam, a mother of one of the children. “They wanted to silence us, but today our children sing louder than ever.”
The ceremony also carried a strong message to the international community. Christian leaders in Iraq have long called for more support in rebuilding homes, schools, and communities destroyed during the war. They say the future of Iraq’s Christian population depends on security, stability, and opportunities for the younger generation.
The number of Christians in Iraq has dropped sharply in the last 20 years, from about 1.5 million before the 2003 U.S. invasion to less than 250,000 today. Many families who fled during ISIS rule never returned, choosing instead to start new lives abroad. But those who remain say they are committed to keeping their faith alive in the land where Christianity has existed for nearly 2,000 years.
The Diocese of Mosul shared photos of the First Communion celebration on social media, showing rows of children dressed in white robes with bright smiles. The images quickly spread online, with many calling it a “sign of hope” not only for Christians in Iraq but for persecuted communities around the world.
Security challenges remain in the region, and rebuilding is slow. Yet, the spirit of the children taking their First Communion shows that faith can outlast fear. The same streets once marked by black flags of ISIS are now filled with church bells and the joyful voices of children praising Jesus.
As the children stepped out of the church, holding candles and singing hymns, many parents wiped away tears. For them, this day was not only about a religious milestone but about resilience — proof that a community nearly destroyed can rise again.
“ISIS tried to kill our faith,” said Father Yousef. “But faith is alive, and these children are the living testimony.”

Key aspects of the petition include:

Allegations of False Representation: The petition challenges a November 3, 2025, letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which falsely claimed that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had replaced acting national chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum with Mohammed.
-
Contradictory NWC Records: Petitioners assert that the NWC’s November 1, 2025, emergency meeting actually resulted in the suspension of Anyanwu and three other officers due to alleged anti-party activities, and no record exists to support the claim that Damagum was suspended or Mohammed appointed.

Furthermore, they noted that the Court of Appeal upheld the NWC’s suspension of Anyanwu on March 9, 2026.
-
Call for Institutional Review: The petitioners have requested that the IGP investigate how INEC processed the contested November 3 letter despite being aware of the existing court orders and the NWC’s official resolutions.
-
Stated Objective: Counsel for the petitioner emphasized that the action is intended to address the integrity of public institutions and prevent the use of misleading internal party documentation, noting their readiness to provide supporting court judgments and party records to the police.
