Ekiti Awards Contracts to Renovate 250 Schools Across State
Ekiti State government has awarded contracts for the renovation of 250 public schools as part of a new plan to improve education infrastructure across the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The contracts, announced this week by Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s administration, will focus on repairing classrooms, providing basic furniture, and upgrading facilities to create safer and more conducive learning environments.
Officials said the project will cover schools in all 16 local government areas, ensuring that rural communities also benefit from the initiative.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Olabimpe Aderiye, said the government is determined to address the poor state of many schools in the state. She explained that years of neglect have left hundreds of classrooms in need of urgent repair.
“Our children cannot learn effectively in leaking classrooms or under damaged roofs,” Aderiye said. “This project shows the governor’s commitment to giving every child in Ekiti equal access to quality education.”
The renovations will include roof repairs, replacement of broken desks, construction of perimeter fences in selected schools, and provision of toilets and water facilities. Contractors have been instructed to complete the work within strict deadlines to avoid delays.
Parents and community leaders have welcomed the announcement. Many said poor facilities have forced students to study in unsafe conditions, sometimes under trees or makeshift shelters.
Mrs. Dupe Afolayan, a parent in Ikole-Ekiti, said the decision is long overdue. “Our children deserve better,” she said. “We hope the contractors will do quality work this time, not just patching walls.”
The government also said it will monitor contractors closely to ensure transparency and accountability. The State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and civil society groups will be involved in the supervision process.
Education experts note that Ekiti, often regarded as a state with strong academic traditions, has faced declining standards in recent years. Poor infrastructure, shortage of teachers, and lack of resources have all contributed to the problem.
Governor Oyebanji has repeatedly pledged to restore the state’s reputation as a center of learning. Last year, his administration recruited new teachers and distributed learning materials to public schools.
The new renovation project is expected to create short-term jobs for local artisans and construction workers. Officials say this will also help stimulate the local economy while improving the education sector.
Observers, however, caution that sustainable investment is needed beyond renovations. They point out that regular maintenance, teacher training, and funding for modern teaching tools will be necessary to bring long-term improvements.
Despite challenges, many residents see the project as a hopeful sign. “If the government continues like this, our schools will return to what they used to be,” said community leader Chief Adewale Ogundipe in Ado-Ekiti.
The renovation of the 250 schools is set to begin in October, with the first phase focusing on the most dilapidated structures. The government has not disclosed the total cost of the contracts but said funds have been secured in the 2025 budget.
Ekiti’s effort comes as other Nigerian states also struggle with deteriorating public schools. Education advocates say the federal government must support states more actively to meet national goals for universal basic education.
For parents and students in Ekiti, the upcoming renovations bring hope. But many insist that quality must match promises.
“Education is the future of our children,” said Mrs. Afolayan. “We are watching closely.”
