GMO Debate Heats Up in Nigeria as Health, Environmental Concerns Surface
Public debate over genetically modified (GM) food crops in Nigeria has intensified following the advocacy of a prominent medical influencer for the nationwide adoption of GM farming. Critics argue that the influencer failed to address potential long-term health and environmental consequences, a concern amplified after images surfaced showing him alongside American businessman Bill Gates, a well-known supporter of GM seeds in African agriculture.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
GMOs are organisms with genetically altered structures designed to improve crop resilience. Dr. Gideon Mmbando, a GMO researcher, emphasized that these crops are engineered to resist drought, disease, and herbicides, positioning them as a solution to Africa’s food insecurity. However, opponents contend that Nigeria’s food challenges are driven by insecurity, farmer killings, banditry, and limited access to finance rather than crop spoilage. They warn that GM foods could pose health and environmental risks.
A study by the National Horticultural Research Institute, published in the African Journal of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, noted that GMO modifications may increase human toxicity, create new allergens, contaminate soil, and enhance antimicrobial resistance, complicating disease treatment. Additionally, concerns exist that some GM crops contain pesticides like glyphosate, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies as probably carcinogenic.
Proponents of GMO farming highlight benefits such as higher yields, climate-resilient crops, shorter harvest times, reduced pesticide use, and improved nutritional content. Yet, critics caution that reliance on patented foreign GM seeds could make Nigeria dependent on companies like Bayer and Monsanto, as seeds must be repurchased each season. Small-scale farmers and traders offer mixed experiences: while some report reduced losses and increased profits, others note the inability to replant GM seeds traditionally.
Nigeria approved genetically modified cowpea seeds, SAMPEA 20-T, in 2019 to combat pod borer infestations, and biotechnology remains endorsed as a strategy to boost food production. Nevertheless, public perception remains divided, fueled by misinformation and exaggerated health concerns. Advocates urge the development of locally produced GM seeds and strong regulatory frameworks, alongside public education campaigns, to improve understanding and reduce dependence on foreign biotechnology.
The global debate continues, with some European nations restricting GM crop cultivation, while countries like the United States fully embrace it. Experts suggest that African nations must balance innovation with regulation to ensure safe and sustainable adoption of biotechnology.
