LASG Sets 18-Month Deadline for Computer Village Relocation
Lagos State Government (LASG) has set an 18-month deadline for the relocation of the popular Computer Village technology market in Ikeja. The government said the move aims to decongest the area and improve traffic flow, security, and the overall business environment.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The relocation plan affects thousands of traders and businesses operating in the sprawling market, which is known for electronics, gadgets, and tech services. Officials said traders must complete the move to the new site within the set timeframe or face regulatory action.
LASG has stated that the new location will provide modern infrastructure, better facilities, and organized spaces for traders. The government also said it will offer assistance to businesses during the transition to minimize disruptions.
The move is part of a broader Lagos State initiative to improve urban planning and reduce congestion in major commercial hubs. Computer Village, which attracts thousands of visitors daily, has long been criticized for chaotic traffic, overcrowding, and poor safety standards.
The government’s Executive Secretary for the Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), Mr. Adewale Adebayo, emphasized the importance of planning for the city’s future. “Computer Village is a vital part of Lagos’ economy, but the current site is not sustainable,” he said. “We are providing traders with time and support to relocate smoothly while ensuring that the city continues to grow in an organized way.”
Many traders have expressed concerns about the relocation, citing high costs and potential loss of customers if they move away from the central Ikeja location. Some have requested incentives or financial assistance to help with the relocation process.
Mr. Tunde Ogunleye, a trader at Computer Village, said, “Moving to a new location is challenging for many of us. We hope the government will provide enough support so that businesses do not suffer. The 18-month deadline is strict, but we are willing to cooperate if proper arrangements are made.”
Urban planners and business analysts have noted that the relocation could have both positive and negative effects. While a modern, well-organized market could attract more customers and improve safety, there is also a risk that some small traders may struggle to adapt to the new site.
The Lagos State government has promised regular updates and engagement with stakeholders to address concerns. Authorities have also said that security, parking, and road access will be improved at the new location, which will be designed to meet modern commercial standards.
Relocation plans for Computer Village have been discussed for several years, but implementation has been slow due to negotiations with traders, land acquisition, and logistical challenges. The 18-month deadline signals a more decisive push by the government to complete the process.
Experts say that if successfully implemented, the move could serve as a model for managing other busy commercial areas in Lagos. It could also help reduce traffic congestion, improve safety, and create a more organized environment for buyers and sellers.
The government said it will monitor progress closely and may take regulatory action against traders who fail to relocate within the timeline. LASG officials also assured residents and business owners that the relocation will not hinder commerce in the city and that efforts will be made to ensure continuity of business operations.
With an 18-month window, authorities hope to strike a balance between urban development and the needs of businesses that have made Computer Village a key technology hub in Lagos. The success of this project could set a precedent for urban planning efforts across Nigeria.
