Shettima Touts $200B Energy Transition Opportunity for Nigeria at UNGA
NEW YORK — Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday told global investors that Nigeria holds a $200 billion opportunity in its energy transition program, urging international partners to seize the chance to work with Africa’s largest economy.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Shettima said Nigeria is positioning itself as a key hub for investment in clean energy, trade, and economic growth. He stressed that partnerships with global businesses are critical to unlocking the country’s potential.
“This is not just an investment in Nigeria,” Shettima said. “It is an investment in Africa’s future.”
$200 Billion Transition Plan
The vice president highlighted Nigeria’s energy transition agenda, which seeks to shift from oil dependence toward cleaner and more sustainable sources of power. He estimated the plan could generate more than $200 billion in opportunities for investors in areas such as renewable energy, natural gas, technology, and infrastructure.
Nigeria, he said, is determined to balance economic growth with climate action. “We recognize the urgency of reducing carbon emissions, but we also see the opportunity to build industries that create jobs and drive development,” Shettima added.
Boost From Sovereign Ratings
Shettima pointed to Nigeria’s sovereign ratings by global agencies such as Fitch and Moody’s, saying they reflect confidence in the country’s financial position. These ratings, he argued, strengthen Nigeria’s case as a stable destination for long-term investment.
He also linked the opportunity to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which brings together a $3.4 trillion market across the continent. According to Shettima, Nigeria’s size and location give it a natural advantage in leading trade within this new framework.
“With AfCFTA, Nigeria can serve as a gateway to African markets,” he said. “Investors here are not only investing in Nigeria, but gaining access to the entire continent.”
Economic Resets in Progress
The vice president described ongoing reforms at home as “multi-billion, multi-faceted economic resets.” He said the government of President Bola Tinubu has been working to stabilize the economy, attract capital, and remove barriers that have discouraged investment in the past.
Shettima noted steps such as currency reforms, subsidy removal, and efforts to increase private-sector participation in key industries. While some of these measures have faced criticism inside Nigeria, he told investors they are necessary to create a more open and competitive economy.
Call for Partnerships
Throughout his remarks, Shettima emphasized the role of partnerships. He urged international investors to view Nigeria not just as a place to trade, but as a country where they can work with local partners to build long-term value.
“We are not asking for aid. We are asking for collaboration,” he said. “Nigeria has the resources, the people, and the market. What we need are partners willing to join us in building a sustainable future.”
Nigeria’s Global Positioning
Nigeria has long relied on oil as its main source of revenue. But with global energy markets shifting and pressure mounting for cleaner solutions, the government is trying to diversify. The energy transition plan is a central part of that strategy.
Economists say success could not only lift Nigeria’s economy but also strengthen Africa’s role in global trade and climate action. By showcasing its ambitions at the UN General Assembly, Nigeria is aiming to assure investors that it is serious about reforms and ready for global cooperation.
Analysts also note that Nigeria faces challenges, including security concerns, infrastructure gaps, and regulatory hurdles. However, the government believes that international partnerships can help overcome these obstacles.
Next Steps
Shettima’s pitch in New York is part of a wider effort by Nigerian leaders to attract foreign direct investment. In recent months, delegations have visited Europe, Asia, and the Middle East to seek deals in energy, agriculture, technology, and infrastructure.
Whether investors respond will depend on how quickly Nigeria can demonstrate progress on reforms and provide a stable environment for business. Still, Shettima’s message at the UNGA was clear: the door is open, and the opportunities are large.
“Together, we can power a new chapter for Nigeria and for Africa,” he said.
