The adjournment came after defense lawyers asked for more time to review evidence presented by the prosecution. The judge agreed, saying both sides must have equal opportunity to prepare their arguments before the trial resumes.

Natasha, whose full name was not immediately released by the court, was arrested earlier this year on charges of cyberfraud, impersonation, and obtaining money by false pretenses. She has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Prosecutors allege that Natasha used fake online identities to defraud victims of large sums of money. They claim she operated an online scheme targeting both Nigerians and foreigners, promising financial returns and personal relationships in exchange for money.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s main anti-corruption agency, has been leading the investigation. Officials say the case is part of a larger crackdown on internet fraud, which has damaged Nigeria’s international reputation.

At Friday’s hearing, prosecutors said they were ready to proceed with witness testimony. However, the defense argued that it had not been given enough time to study digital evidence, including bank records and social media communications.

Judge Ibrahim Yusuf granted the request and scheduled the next hearing for Oct. 20. He urged both parties to avoid unnecessary delays, stressing that the court must balance the right to a fair trial with the need for swift justice.

Outside the courtroom, EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren told reporters the agency remains confident in its case. “We believe we have strong evidence that will stand in court,” he said. “This trial is not only about one individual but about sending a message that cybercrime will not be tolerated.”

Natasha’s defense team, meanwhile, said the delay was necessary to ensure fairness. “Our client has the right to fully examine the evidence against her,” attorney Chidi Nwankwo said. “We are prepared to defend her vigorously when the trial resumes.”

The case has sparked wide debate on social media, where Natasha built her large following. Some of her supporters insist she is innocent and being targeted because of her outspoken views online. Others argue the trial shows that authorities are finally taking online fraud more seriously.

Nigeria has struggled for years with internet fraud, often called “Yahoo Yahoo.” While the government has made hundreds of arrests, convictions remain limited, raising concerns about weak enforcement and lengthy court processes.

Legal experts say Natasha’s case could set an important precedent. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison under Nigeria’s cybercrime laws, along with heavy fines.

Human rights groups have also called for transparency in the trial. “The public must see that justice is done fairly and without political influence,” said Amina Bello, director of the Civil Rights Forum. “High-profile cases like this can either build or break trust in the justice system.”

For now, Natasha remains in custody. The judge said a decision on bail would be considered at the next hearing.

The adjournment means the case will stretch into late October, leaving both supporters and critics waiting to see whether Nigeria can deliver a timely verdict in a cybercrime case that has attracted both national and international attention.
