ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has issued a flood warning for 15 states and 69 communities, cautioning residents of heavy rainfall and possible flooding between Sept. 24 and Sept. 28.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The warning came in a statement from the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Ministry of Environment. Officials said the advisory was part of efforts to reduce risks during Nigeria’s peak rainy season.

The states expected to be most affected are Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, and Zamfara.

Among the 69 at-risk communities are major towns and cities such as Yola in Adamawa, Yenagoa in Bayelsa, Warri in Delta, Benin City in Edo, Oguta in Imo, Kano in Kano State, Jibia in Katsina, Akure in Ondo, Oyo in Oyo State, Ahoada in Rivers, Shagari in Sokoto, Serti in Taraba, and Gusau in Zamfara.

The ministry urged residents and local authorities in these areas to prepare for possible flooding by taking preventive measures to protect lives and property.

“Stakeholders, residents, and emergency agencies should remain vigilant and put in place necessary precautions to reduce the impact of the expected rainfall,” the statement said.

Early Warning System

The National Flood Early Warning Centre said the alert was part of a wider plan to provide timely information that can help communities prepare before disasters strike. Nigeria has experienced severe flooding in recent years, with thousands displaced and farmlands destroyed.

In 2022, record floods killed more than 600 people and displaced over 1.4 million across the country, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). That disaster, officials said, highlighted the need for stronger early-warning systems and better disaster preparedness.

Call for Preparedness

Flooding remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges in Nigeria, often fueled by heavy rains, poor urban planning, and blocked drainage systems. The government has stressed the importance of local governments, emergency response teams, and communities working together to minimize losses.

Environmental experts have also called on state governments to invest more in flood-control infrastructure, including drainage channels, levees, and early response equipment.

The Ministry of Environment said its latest alert was designed to help communities act quickly. Officials encouraged residents to avoid building on floodplains, clear blocked gutters, and move valuables and livestock to safer areas.

Widespread Risk

Rivers, low-lying areas, and crowded urban centers are expected to be the most vulnerable. Residents in riverine states such as Bayelsa, Rivers, and Delta are being urged to prepare for potential water overflow from rising river levels.

In the northern states of Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara, both rural communities and urban neighborhoods face risks from flash floods, which can sweep through settlements within minutes of heavy rain.

Officials said that in Taraba and Adamawa, heavy rainfall in hilly areas could trigger landslides or river flooding, threatening farms and settlements along the Benue River.

Next Steps

The government is working with NEMA and state emergency agencies to monitor rainfall patterns and respond quickly if floods occur. Residents are advised to follow updates from official channels, including radio, television, and local government announcements.

The ministry also appealed to communities to cooperate with emergency workers and report signs of rising water levels early to reduce losses.

“The goal of this warning is to save lives, protect property, and ensure that Nigerians are better prepared for extreme weather events,” the statement added.

As the rainy season continues, experts say the warning underscores the need for long-term solutions to Nigeria’s flooding challenges, including improved infrastructure, stronger urban planning, and greater community awareness.

“A Capital Under Watch: Inside U.S. Advisory And Nigeria’s Security Reality”.

Published

on

A few weeks ago, the United States Department of State approved the voluntary departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The embassy explained that the directive was issued in response to what it described as a worsening security situation across Nigeria.

In an updated travel advisory released on April 8, 2026, U.S. citizens were urged to reconsider travel to Nigeria due to concerns over crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.

The advisory placed Nigeria at “Level 3: Reconsider Travel,” while several states were categorised under “Level 4: Do Not Travel.”

It also added Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba to the list of high-risk areas, bringing the total number of states under the “Do Not Travel” warning to 23.

According to the advisory, violent crimes such as armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnappings for ransom remain widespread, with foreign nationals often targeted.

It further warned that terrorist attacks could occur in public places including markets, religious centres, hotels, and large gatherings, while also noting that healthcare services in the country are inconsistent and below global standards.

reports that although no specific incident was cited in the latest update, the warning reflects broader concerns about security conditions in parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi described the development as troubling, calling it a “bad omen” that should be treated as a national emergency, especially at a time when Nigeria is seeking to attract foreign investment.

Activist Omoyele Sowore also questioned the advisory, expressing concern about the implications of the warning for the nation’s capital.

In response, the Federal Government said the advisory should not be interpreted as an indication of a collapse in security, describing it as a routine precaution based on internal procedures.

Minister of Information Mohammed Idris said the warning does not reflect the overall situation in the country, noting that Nigeria remains largely stable despite isolated security challenges.

He stressed that most parts of the country continue to function normally and are not experiencing widespread insecurity.

Recent developments in Abuja, however, have raised some concern, including reports of residents fleeing certain communities after threats of attacks by suspected armed groups, as well as intelligence warnings about possible attempts to target key infrastructure in the capital.

Security agencies have also recorded arrests of suspected criminal networks and recovered stolen vehicles in ongoing operations across the city.

Similar travel advisories have been issued in the past by the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, all pointing to persistent security concerns in Nigeria, particularly around Abuja due to its political significance.

A security expert noted that such advisories often reflect precautionary intelligence assessments rather than immediate threats, and are intended to prevent risks to personnel.

He explained that while they may not always signal an imminent danger, they are usually based on patterns of instability and are taken seriously by diplomatic missions.

The expert further advised residents to remain alert, stay aware of their surroundings, and avoid panic, while encouraging stronger coordination between security agencies and improved public safety measures to restore confidence.

FA Introduces New Rules To Limit Heading Over Brain Health Fears.

Published

on

The Football Association (FA) has announced new restrictions aimed at reducing heading in football, following increasing concerns about its possible long-term effects on players’ brain health.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the decision comes after growing scientific research suggesting a possible link between repeated heading of the ball and neurological problems later in life.

Experts explain that each header produces a short burst of force that travels to the brain at impact. While a single instance is considered low risk, medical specialists warn that repeated exposure over time may contribute to cumulative brain injury.

A major study known as the FIELD research project found that former professional footballers are about 3.5 times more likely to develop neurodegenerative diseases compared to the general population.

In response, the FA has introduced a phased restriction on heading for children under the age of 11. It has also issued updated training guidelines to reduce high-impact headers, especially those from set pieces such as corners, crosses, and free-kicks.

Officials say the measures are designed to reduce repetitive head impacts while preserving the essential nature of the game.

FA Chief Medical Officer Charlotte Cowie said the decision was based on new independent findings that provide deeper insight into the issue.

She added that the research had been shared with global football governing bodies, including FIFA and UEFA, to encourage wider collaboration on the matter.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Football Association has taken a stricter approach by banning heading in training sessions the day before and after matches in professional football.

Football authorities say these steps are precautionary and part of ongoing efforts to protect players while research into long-term effects continues.

reports that the operation, carried out on April 19, 2026, forms part of ongoing military efforts to maintain pressure on insurgent groups in the North-East region.

According to the Director of Public Relations and Information, Ehimen Ejodame, the mission was based on credible intelligence, supported by Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) activities.

He explained that the intelligence confirmed the presence of terrorists operating from fortified positions and underground bunkers within the area.

Ejodame said the Air Force deployed precision-guided munitions on the identified targets, successfully destroying the structures and eliminating several terrorists as well as key logistics hubs.

He added that post-strike assessment confirmed significant damage to the targets.

“The sustained tempo of air operations continues to degrade terrorist networks, leaving them increasingly exposed and disrupted, with mounting pressure forcing them into desperate and reactive actions,” he said.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to continuing operations until insurgent elements are fully eliminated.
