Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to depart from Abuja, Nigeria, to attend the 3rd Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Forum in Beijing, China, as the representative of President Bola Tinubu. The forum will bring together world leaders from over 130 countries and is scheduled to take place from October 16 to 18.
The forum’s theme is “High-quality Belt and Road Cooperation: Together for Common Development and Prosperity.” Shettima’s participation aims to provide Nigeria with a platform to attract investors for further developmental projects. During the forum, he will hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders to promote Nigeria’s trade and investment relations, aligning with the economic development agenda of the Tinubu administration.
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), launched by the President of China, Xi Jinping, is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2023. It seeks international collaboration to enhance cooperation and promote infrastructure investments in nearly 70 countries across Asia, Africa, and Europe through land and maritime routes.
Nigeria, along with other partner countries, signed a Belt and Road cooperation agreement with China in 2018, positioning itself to benefit from the initiative’s infrastructure investments, such as ports, skyscrapers, railroads, roads, bridges, airports, dams, and coal-fired power stations.
The Nigerian delegation accompanying Vice President Shettima includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; the Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali; the Minister of Works, David Umahi; the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite; the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Fidet Okhira; and the Director-General of Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, Micheal Ohiani.
In addition to attending the BRI Forum in China, Vice President Shettima will depart for the United States where he will deliver a keynote address at the African Development Bank (AfDB) and World Food Prize, facilitated by the Norman E. Borlaug International Dialogue. This event is scheduled to begin on October 24, 2023. Shettima will engage with various stakeholders, partners, and investors to discuss opportunities for investments in Nigeria. This opportunity will also allow him to highlight ongoing reforms in the Nigerian agrifood sector. The Vice President is expected to return to Nigeria after fulfilling his commitments in the US.
