Mystery of Abandoned Aircraft Along Lekki-Epe Expressway Puzzles Lagos Residents
LAGOS, Nigeria — An abandoned aircraft sitting along the busy Lekki-Epe expressway has become a strange landmark and a source of speculation for commuters, residents, and business owners in the area.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The white airplane, stripped of its engines and interior, stands idle close to the road, attracting attention from motorists who slow down to take pictures or ask questions about its history.
For many Lagos residents, the sight of a full-size aircraft outside an airport is unusual. Lagos is Nigeria’s commercial capital, known for traffic congestion, skyscrapers, and markets — not for grounded planes sitting beside expressways.
The aircraft first appeared several years ago, reportedly moved there by private owners who had plans to convert it into a business facility. Some community members said it was meant to become a restaurant, bar, or event center. Others believed it was brought in for film production or as a tourist attraction.
However, years later, the project has been abandoned. The aircraft now sits empty, weathered by sun and rain, with rust appearing on its body. Weeds have grown around its wheels, and the once-exciting idea has faded into neglect.
Local traders along the expressway say the aircraft once drew crowds of curious visitors. Food sellers and shop owners nearby made extra income from the increased human traffic. But as time passed and no business developed, interest declined.
“People used to stop and take pictures,” said Chinyere Nwosu, who runs a small kiosk near the site. “We thought it would turn into something big, maybe a restaurant. But now, it is just there, wasting away.”
For drivers stuck in traffic, the plane remains a talking point. Some wonder how it was transported to the site in the first place, given its large size. Moving an aircraft through Lagos streets is no small task.
“It is strange to see a plane on the roadside. Every time I pass here, I think about the story behind it,” said taxi driver Abubakar Musa. “It could have been useful, but it has turned into an eyesore.”
Experts say converting aircraft into businesses is not new. In other countries, retired planes have been transformed into cafes, hotels, or even classrooms. The attraction often draws visitors, especially young people eager to share pictures on social media.
In Lagos, where space for entertainment is limited and tourism is growing, the abandoned aircraft could have been a success if the project had continued. Instead, its neglect raises questions about poor planning and the challenges of private investment.
Urban analysts also note that unused projects often dot Lagos, from unfinished buildings to empty shopping centers. The aircraft has simply become another symbol of abandoned ambition in the city.
For now, officials have not announced any plan to remove or repurpose the aircraft. It remains in place, fading slowly under the Lagos sun.
Some residents hope someone will revive the idea and turn the plane into something useful. “It doesn’t have to rot,” said local resident Tunde Ajayi. “If government or private investors can step in, it can still be a tourist site. Right now, it looks like waste.”
The Lekki-Epe expressway continues to expand as new housing estates, malls, and businesses develop in the area. Against that background of rapid urban growth, the abandoned aircraft stands as both a curiosity and a reminder of opportunities lost.
For now, its mystery remains unsolved. Commuters pass by every day, still asking the same question: What is the story behind this abandoned plane?
