Nigeria, Brazil To Seal Pact On Direct Flights In Landmark Tinubu Visit
The Federal Government has finalized arrangements to sign a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with Brazil, a move expected to open direct flight routes between the two nations. According to Nivo News, the agreement will be sealed during President Bola Tinubu’s two-day state visit to Brasília at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Obafemi Bajomo, Special Adviser on Foreign Direct Investments to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, disclosed that the required documents are ready for exchange. He noted that the BASA would allow Nigerian carriers such as Air Peace and Caverton to operate four to five weekly flights across the South Atlantic, drastically cutting travel time and logistics costs while creating new trade corridors for agricultural products, manufactured goods, and services.
Bajomo described the development as a long-awaited breakthrough that will reshape air connectivity, commerce, and cultural exchange between the two largest economies in Africa and South America. He recalled that negotiations began in May 2025, when Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo led a Nigerian delegation to Brazil for talks with Minister of Ports and Airports Silvio Costa Filho. Those discussions produced a technical working group that accelerated the process.
The agreement also includes provisions for technical cooperation, such as pilot training and airport infrastructure development, to enhance Nigeria’s global aviation competitiveness. Bajomo confirmed that all statutory procedures—including ministerial vetting, clearance by the Federal Ministry of Justice, and approval from the Federal Executive Council—have been completed.
Quoting Minister Keyamo, Bajomo said the pact extends beyond aviation to strengthen economic and cultural ties, noting that Brazil’s deep Yoruba heritage reflects centuries-old connections with Nigeria. Keyamo reportedly described both countries as “twins separated at birth, now reunited,” underscoring the cultural depth of the relationship.
