The Calabar Correctional Centre in Cross River State has issued a statement in response to the recent attack on its facility by unidentified gunmen. The facility confirmed the tragic death of one of its personnel, Mr. Polycarp Essien, who was caught in the crossfire during the attack that occurred on Wednesday evening.

Superintendent Effangha Etim, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) in Calabar, provided details of the incident in a telephone interview on Thursday.

According to the PRO, the armed assailants infiltrated the backside of the Correctional Centre and launched an attack on the facility. They fired shots sporadically in an attempt to intimidate the officers on duty and gain access to the facility.

Etim explained that the correctional officers had no choice but to repel the attack. Tragically, during the confrontation, one of the officers lost his life, and the armed assailants were eventually overpowered.

The Correctional Centre is currently conducting an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding this attack. It has been reported that the gunmen, believed to be militants, came from nearby creeks to carry out the assault on the facility located near Afokang community in Calabar South LGA of Cross River State. After realizing the superior firepower of the correctional officers, the gunmen fled back into the creeks, having sustained gunshot injuries.
