Nigerian Democracy for Sale? Reps Minority Leader Says Nomination Costs Are the Real Scandal”
The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Kingsley Chinda, has described the monetisation of party nomination processes as the most corrupt stage in Nigeria’s electoral system.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during the public presentation and stakeholder engagement on the Cost of Politics and Political Inclusion Report by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), Chinda decried the high cost of nomination forms and the lack of transparency in party primaries.
“The monetisation of party nominations is arguably the most corrupt phase of our electoral process,” Chinda said. “We must confront the hard question: should nomination forms cost millions of naira? What exactly is being valued?”
The lawmaker from Rivers State called for sweeping reforms to promote internal party democracy and eliminate financial barriers that discourage broad political participation.
He proposed several solutions, including:
-
The introduction of digital voting in party primaries;
-
A transparent and inclusive delegate selection process;
-
Enforceable limits on internal campaign spending.
Chinda stressed that while Nigeria has existing laws, such as the Electoral Act, which prescribes spending caps between ₦70 million and ₦100 million, enforcement remains weak.
To tackle this gap, he recommended the establishment of an independent Electoral Offences Commission to monitor compliance and enforce accountability. He also advocated:
-
Real-time tracking of campaign finances;
-
Mandatory public disclosure of funding sources;
-
Stiff penalties, including disqualification of offenders from future elections.
“Moving beyond paper compliance is critical,” he added. “Curbing the high cost of politics is essential to expanding participation and safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.”
Also speaking at the event, Adebowale Olorunmola, Country Director of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, warned that the escalating cost of contesting elections poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s democratic future.
“Our democracy thrives when all voices are heard, but the high cost of politics in Nigeria is silencing too many,” Olorunmola stated.
He noted that the new report sheds light on how financial barriers are particularly excluding women and marginalized groups from meaningful participation.
Beyond highlighting the problem, Olorunmola said the report aims to ignite policy dialogue and practical reforms to lower the cost of participation in politics.
“Let us all approach this conversation with open minds and a shared resolve to create a political system that reflects the hopes and aspirations of all Nigerians. Together, we can build a democracy where every citizen, regardless of background or gender, has an equal opportunity to lead,” he said.
