FG Scrambles To Stop Fresh ASUU Strike As Tense Meetings Begin Monday.
The Federal Government has fixed two high-level meetings with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for Monday, November 24, and Tuesday, November 25, 2025, in a bid to avert another nationwide shutdown of public universities. ASUU’s National Executive Council is expected to convene immediately after the government meetings to decide whether to proceed with a fresh industrial action. A senior NEC member, who spoke anonymously in Abuja, accused the government of intentionally dragging negotiations, saying the recently scheduled meetings appear to be an attempt to stall the union’s next move.
ASUU’s one-month ultimatum to the government expired on Saturday, rekindling fears of another interruption to Nigeria’s already strained academic calendar. The union had earlier suspended its two-week warning strike on October 22, giving the government a one-month window to meet critical demands. These include a full review of the 2009 agreement, the payment of outstanding salaries and earned academic allowances, and the release of revitalisation funds for public universities. The union had warned that it would resume a total strike “without prior notice” if the government failed to act within the agreed timeframe.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has insisted that the government has met the union’s demands. In a briefing two weeks ago, he reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s directive that public universities must not be closed under any circumstances. He described ASUU’s recent six-day warning strike as unwarranted and affirmed that negotiations were ongoing, noting that he had spoken to the union’s leadership earlier in the day.
Alausa added that part of his recent visit to the Presidential Villa was to update the President on the state of negotiations and seek further concessions to bring the standoff to an end.
