Benue Under Siege: 17 Killed in Coordinated Militia Attacks, Police Confirm
Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of 17 individuals following coordinated attacks by suspected armed Fulani herdsmen on communities within the Logo and Ukum Local Government Areas between Thursday and Friday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The command’s spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, disclosed the tragic development in a statement on Friday, stating that the violence began on Thursday evening when a large group of armed militia infiltrated the Sankera axis.
According to her, the militants launched attacks on Gbagir in Ukum LGA and parts of Katsina-Ala in Logo LGA. “At around 9:00 p.m. on April 17, 2025, intelligence reached the command that heavily armed groups had stormed the Sankera region, intent on assaulting nearby communities,” she said.
In response, Commissioner of Police CP Steve H. Yabanet immediately dispatched tactical teams to reinforce existing personnel and coordinate with other security agencies to neutralize the threat.
Anene noted that while officers engaged the assailants, they discovered that the attackers had already ambushed and killed farmers in the early morning hours. “In Gbagir alone, five victims were recovered and taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.”
Meanwhile, a separate but simultaneous attack occurred in Logo, where 12 more residents were killed before security operatives could intervene. This brought the official death toll to 17.
She further revealed that joint security forces were actively pursuing the attackers, who had retreated into the forests bordering the Taraba axis.
The police command cautioned the public against spreading unverified reports capable of inciting panic or tension. “Commissioner Yabanet warns social media users against disseminating false narratives that could destabilize the region,” Anene stressed.
She reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to combating insecurity and called on residents, especially those in the Sankera area, to support security efforts by providing credible information.
