The Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Lady Lydia Onuoha, gave the warning on Tuesday in Umuahia. She expressed concern over the rising cases of irregular attendance and absenteeism among some teachers, despite the current administration’s efforts to enhance their welfare.
She stated that erring teachers would face sanctions—including queries, suspension, or dismissal—in line with the Public Service Rules and the Teachers’ Code of Conduct.
“The government will invoke the full weight of public service rules when necessary. We will not hesitate to act in the interest of our children and the future of Abia State,” she said.
Describing the situation as a serious breach of professional ethics, Onuoha condemned the behaviour as a betrayal of the public’s trust in educators to guide and inspire future generations.
She noted with satisfaction that Governor Alex Otti’s administration has prioritized teacher welfare, including prompt and regular salary payments, approval of overdue promotions, settlement of leave allowances, and implementation of the 27.5% Teachers’ Special Salary (TSS).
“The TSS has been fully implemented, and over 20% of the state’s 2025 budget has been earmarked for the education sector—one of the highest allocations in the country. This clearly reflects our commitment to education reform,” she said.
Onuoha announced that ASUBEB will roll out a comprehensive state-wide monitoring and enforcement plan, in collaboration with Local Government Education Authorities and School-Based Management Committees.
The initiative will introduce biometric attendance systems to ensure daily tracking of teacher attendance and punctuality. It also includes unannounced school visits, quality assurance audits, and mandatory monthly attendance reports from headteachers to their respective LG authorities and ASUBEB.
She urged teachers to align with the vision of a “New Abia,” where education is not only free and compulsory but also impactful and transformative.
“We are not just building new classrooms; we are committed to filling them with competent, present, and responsible teachers. It is time for teachers to reciprocate government support by demonstrating professionalism and dedication,” she added.
Onuoha also encouraged parents and community members to support the reforms by reporting concerns or complaints about teacher conduct through ASUBEB’s dedicated customer care line: 07076904864.
