Customs Foils ₦25.9m Fuel Smuggling Attempt at Niger Border
The Nigeria Customs Service has successfully intercepted 500 jerry cans (25 litres each) and two drums of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), valued at over ₦25.9 million, during an anti-smuggling operation along the Babana border corridor in Niger State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
At a press conference held at the Niger-Kogi Area Command headquarters in Minna, Assistant Comptroller General of Customs and National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, Hussein Ejibunu, disclosed that the seized fuel was being illegally transported through established smuggling routes including Kabe-Tunga-Madugu, Kabe-Kibera, Dekara-Gedang-Zana, and Babana-Gwarizo roads.
Ejibunu raised serious concerns over the broader implications of fuel smuggling, stressing its threat to both national security and economic stability.
“The illicit export of petroleum products weakens government efforts, supports criminal activities, and undermines our economy,” he said.
He emphasized that such practices potentially aid armed groups by supplying them with essential resources, adding:
“When we lose fuel to smugglers, we are empowering those who may turn around to attack us.”
Though no arrests were made in the operation, Ejibunu stated that identifying and prosecuting suspects remains a critical goal:
“The seizure is incomplete without bringing the perpetrators to justice. Knowing who is behind this act is essential to dismantling the network.”
He further condemned the motivation behind the act, calling it an act of greed and sabotage:
“Despite the fact that our refineries are functioning, individuals still divert our fuel for profit across borders. PMS is meant for domestic use, and anyone seeking to export it must follow due process.”
Ejibunu credited the success of the operation to robust intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, and local community support.
“This is a landmark seizure in Niger State, showing our commitment to eradicating fuel smuggling.”
The Controller of the Niger-Kogi Command, Comptroller Pascal Chibuoke, also commended the officers involved and called for improved logistical support to sustain the momentum:
“This operation proves the power of teamwork between agencies and the communities. With enhanced support, we can greatly minimize smuggling.”
The seized petroleum products are scheduled for public auction, with each jerry can set at ₦10,000, according to officials of Operation Whirlwind.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
