Abia State Sets Up Committees to Review Outdated Criminal Laws
The Abia State Government has established two committees tasked with reviewing and updating key legal frameworks, including the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2017, the Criminal Code Law 2005, and the Child Rights Law 2006.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The primary objective of the committees is to address ambiguities, inconsistencies, outdated provisions, and other areas in need of modernization within these laws.
During the inauguration of the committees in his office in Umuahia, Abia State’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Uwanna Ikechukwu, emphasized that the review would enhance the efficiency of the state’s criminal justice system and rectify any identified flaws.
Ikechukwu further highlighted the need to simplify the Child Rights Law to ensure it is easily understood by all residents, including older women.
The committees, which include judges, chief magistrates, legal experts from the judiciary, Ministry of Justice, and civil society representatives, were urged to perform their duties diligently. Ikechukwu assured them of full support in ensuring smooth operations.
Justice Agwu Umah Kalu K. was appointed the Chairman of the Joint Review Committee on the Administration of Criminal Justice Law 2017 and the Criminal Code Law 2005, while Paul Ogubunka was named the Chairman of the Committee for Simplifying the Child Rights Law 2006.
