Tension in APC: National Assembly Members Fume Over Denied Automatic Return Bids”
Some members of the House of Representatives elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have stated that they are not unsettled by the party’s decision to forgo automatic tickets and are prepared to contest in primary elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to reports, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Felix Morka, dismissed as false the circulating claims that the party had resolved to give automatic tickets to all sitting National Assembly members. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Morka urged the public to disregard such speculation.
Reacting to the development, Hon. Kolawole Akinlayo, who represents the Ido/Osi/Ilejemeje Federal Constituency in Ekiti State, affirmed in an interview with Punch that he will seek re-election.
“I will definitely go for a second term. It’s a must,” Akinlayo declared.
In the same vein, another House member—who preferred to remain anonymous—voiced support for going through the primaries but emphasized the importance of institutional memory in the success of any legislature.
He argued that lawmakers grow in competence with time spent in parliament, enhancing their grasp of lawmaking, oversight, and representation duties.
“Automatic tickets don’t necessarily guarantee electoral success,” he said. “Whatever decision the party takes, I’m ready to abide by it. If primaries are the way forward, I’ll participate. But let’s remember—like old wine, lawmakers get better with time.
“One of the major setbacks of the 10th Assembly was the high turnover of members who didn’t return after the 2023 election. Fresh lawmakers often need time to find their footing.”
He added, “While I’m not saying everyone should be returned automatically, the party must determine what it wants from the parliament and act in the best interest of the country.”
