In a bold declaration, the monarch expressed his wish to henceforth be addressed as the “Alaafin of Iwo.”
According to reports, Oba Akanbi made this statement during a courtesy visit from the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, at his palace in Iwo on Tuesday.
Welcoming his royal guest, the Oluwo described the visit as a symbol of unity and a gesture that would further strengthen the ties between the towns of Oyo and Iwo.
Oba Akanbi affirmed that, to his knowledge, no other traditional title in Yorubaland surpasses the Alaafin, emphasizing that it was originally reserved for descendants of Oduduwa.
“From now on, I wish to be addressed as the Alaafin of Iwo,” he said, adding that he plans to notify the government of this decision.
“I don’t know of any other title in Yorubaland more significant than the Alaafin. That was the title Oranmiyan bore, and I will also adopt it.”
He praised Oba Owoade for his humility and wisdom, stating that Oyo is destined for peace and growth under his leadership. He also expressed optimism that the cordial relationship between Oyo and Iwo will continue to flourish.
Oba Owoade, accompanied by his wife, Abiwumi, and a delegation of chiefs, explained that his visit was to appreciate the Oluwo’s presence at his April coronation ceremony.
He also recalled that Oba Akanbi was among the first to congratulate him after he was named Alaafin-elect.
“I’m here today to show appreciation. The Oluwo came for my coronation, and even earlier, when my name was announced as Alaafin-elect, he called me to express his congratulations.
“This visit is to strengthen the long-standing bond between Oyo and Iwo,” the Alaafin added.
