Speaking to lawmakers in Abuja, Abbas stressed the need to expedite bills that would underpin democratic integrity and alleviate socio-economic hardship. Central to this, he noted, is the proposed electoral reform bill—seen as a cornerstone for strengthening Nigeria’s democratic framework.
The Speaker outlined a series of events lined up for the second anniversary of the 10th House, including a Public Policy Dialogue, citizens’ roundtables, and the House Open Week. These initiatives aim to enhance public engagement, transparency, and institutional reform.
He also highlighted the legislature’s recent achievements, such as the passage of key tax reform bills designed to increase government revenue and attract investment. Looking ahead, Abbas announced plans for a high-level Reconciliation Committee in collaboration with the Senate to address political unrest in Rivers and other volatile states.
Reacting to the rising insecurity, including terrorist attacks in Borno and communal violence in Plateau and Kwara, Abbas condemned the violence and called for improved intelligence gathering, surveillance, and inter-agency coordination. He extended condolences to the victims’ families and demanded urgent action from security agencies.
Abbas also reaffirmed the House’s dedication to a comprehensive constitutional review, pledging substantial progress in the coming months. He underscored that the aim is to reflect the true aspirations of Nigerians in the constitutional amendment process.
In closing, the Speaker called on all lawmakers to actively participate in upcoming legislative engagements, describing them as pivotal to shaping the nation’s future and deepening democratic accountability.
