Yakubu, who was reappointed for a second five-year term on December 9, 2020, made the announcement during a meeting with the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Tuesday.
Following his resignation, one of INEC’s National Commissioners, Barrister May Agbamuche-Mbu, has been named Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive successor by the President.
Agbamuche-Mbu, a National Commissioner representing the South, currently oversees the commission’s Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints Committee (LSCCC).
Yakubu’s decision to step down aligns with constitutional provisions limiting the tenure of INEC chairmen. He had earlier completed his first term in November 2020 before being reappointed and confirmed by the Senate for another term.
In his farewell remarks, Yakubu expressed heartfelt appreciation to the staff of the commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners for their loyalty, diligence, and commitment during his time in office. He described his tenure as both challenging and rewarding, emphasizing his confidence in the commission’s continued progress under new leadership.
Details of the transition are expected to unfold in the coming days.
