Tinubu’s Assent To NFSS Bill Will Strengthen War Against Terror, Says Commander.
The Commander-General of the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS), Wole Joshua Osatimehin, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give presidential assent to the bill establishing the NFSS, describing it as a crucial step in enhancing the country’s fight against terrorism and banditry.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Osatimehin emphasized that many of Nigeria’s forests have become sanctuaries for criminals and insurgents, making it imperative for the government to strengthen forest security through a dedicated and legally backed agency like the NFSS.
According to Nivo News, President Tinubu had earlier, in May 2025, approved the creation of forest guards to safeguard the nation’s forest reserves. The initiative, coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Ministry of Environment, aims to train and arm forest guards who will work alongside existing security agencies to flush out criminal groups hiding within forested areas. The programme is expected to create thousands of job opportunities for young Nigerians across the country.
Osatimehin disclosed that NFSS operatives are already active in several states, including Zamfara, Borno, Benue, Taraba, Oyo, and Lagos, supporting security operations aimed at dismantling terrorist and bandit hideouts. However, he lamented that despite having over 48,000 personnel nationwide, the absence of legal recognition and federal funding has hindered the agency’s full operational effectiveness.
“The lack of federal approval has dampened our morale and affected our operational confidence,” Osatimehin said. “We appeal to President Tinubu to assent to the NFSS Bill so we can operate with proper legal backing.”
He explained that the organization, which originated in 2016 from local hunter associations, evolved into the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service before transforming into the current NFSS structure. The bill for its establishment, which received overwhelming public support during the National Assembly hearings, has already been passed by both chambers and transmitted to the President for assent.
Osatimehin further expressed concern over the poor welfare conditions of NFSS personnel, many of whom, he said, serve without pay or basic support. He urged the Federal Government to formalize their status and provide necessary resources to boost their morale and efficiency.
“We are not competing with any existing security agency,” he stressed. “Our goal is to complement their efforts and ensure our forests are no longer safe havens for criminals. By signing the NFSS Bill, President Tinubu will be strengthening national security and making history.”
