Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has directed the contractor overseeing the construction of the Umuahia Mega Bus Terminal to expand the roads around the project. The move is aimed at easing vehicular movement and enhancing traffic flow in the area.
During an inspection visit to the terminal site on Sunday, Governor Otti expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project. He commended the contractor for staying on schedule while highlighting areas requiring minor adjustments.
“I think the contractors are doing very well. They have been known to perform excellently and are adhering to the project schedule,” Otti said. However, he noted that “the roads need to be wider, especially around the Cooperative roundabout,” emphasizing the need for junction improvements and traffic light installations.
Replicating Oshodi’s Transport Model
Otti revealed that the Umuahia Mega Bus Terminal is modeled after the successful transport hub in Oshodi, Lagos. According to the governor, the terminal will serve as a central point for buses, railways, shopping centers, hotels, and recreational spaces. “We want to create a place where people can come, meet, have fun, and enjoy various facilities including a children’s playground,” Otti said.
Transforming Umuahia’s Infrastructure
The governor emphasized that the project would help streamline the capital city’s transport system by eliminating the disorderly spread of multiple parks. He added that the development would attract businesses, with provisions for hotels, shopping plazas, and playgrounds within the terminal area.
While Otti acknowledged that the project might not yield immediate financial returns, he stressed its long-term economic benefits. “The most important thing is for Umuahia to look like a capital city. In the long run, this project will generate significant revenue,” he noted.
Otti’s Commitment to the People
Earlier in the day, while attending a Sunday service at Dunamis Church, Umuahia, Governor Otti expressed gratitude to church members for their continued support. He reiterated his administration’s focus on the welfare of Abia’s citizens, assuring that workers’ salaries and arrears would remain a priority.
“We believe that a responsible government must focus on the welfare of the people. That’s why we are clearing salary arrears left by previous administrations. It’s not that we have excess funds, but we believe a worker deserves their wage,” Otti stated.
The governor assured the congregation that his administration would not allow public funds to be misused, affirming that every naira would be spent on the people’s welfare. “In so far as I remain here, your money will not be shared. It will be used to work for you,” he vowed.
Church Leaders Pray for Otti and Abia State
During the service, Pastor Anthony Itodo, the resident pastor of Dunamis Church, delivered a sermon titled “The Profit and Dividends of Wisdom,” where he highlighted the importance of wisdom in leadership. He led a prayer session for Governor Otti, his team, and the entire state of Abia.
Governor Otti was accompanied to the church by notable government officials, including Hon. Obi Aguocha, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Nmerekini, and the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu.
