The Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) in Effurun, Delta State, is set to introduce a pioneering program focused on waste management and technology for the 2025/2026 academic session. This initiative was announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, following the launch of the Zero Waste Campus Project, sponsored by the Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF).
Prof. Rim-Rukeh emphasized the university’s commitment to finding solutions to pressing environmental issues, particularly those arising from improper waste management. “As a bedrock of knowledge, we recognize the need to address environmental problems,” he stated. He highlighted that the project aims to remove waste from the university and transform it into resources that benefit society.
The Vice-Chancellor further noted, “We have over 15,000 students on campus, and it is essential to extend our knowledge and solutions to the wider community.” The university plans to bridge the knowledge gap in sustainability by introducing programs such as a Post Graduate Diploma in Waste Management and Technology, moving beyond traditional degrees like BSc in Animal Science.
The university management fully supports this initiative, which is set to begin in the upcoming academic session. It will cover the principles and technologies of waste management, allowing students to contribute meaningfully to sustainable practices.
Mr. Richard Benin, Executive Director of CODAF, called for tertiary institutions to prioritize responsible consumption, waste reduction, and recycling. He highlighted the significance of this project, stating, “FUPRE is the first institution in Nigeria to launch this initiative, aiming to become the first Zero Waste University in Nigeria and Africa.”
Benin underscored the importance of fostering a culture of sustainability within the university community. The Zero Waste Campus Project is designed to not only reduce plastic waste but also to establish an ecosystem that prioritizes responsible consumption and effective waste management practices.
The introduction of a Post Graduate Program on Zero Waste would empower students with the knowledge and skills to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainability. “Every member of the university community will have the opportunity to contribute to a healthier planet,” Benin explained, emphasizing innovative solutions such as reusable containers and education on waste sorting.
