The Federal Government has announced the immediate commencement of an upgrade for the Alau Dam located in Maiduguri, Borno State. This initiative aims to address the ongoing challenges posed by the dam’s overflow and provide a lasting solution to the recurring flood disasters that have affected the region.
In a press statement released on Thursday, the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Funmi Imuetinyan, provided details about this crucial development. The announcement came during a visit to Maiduguri by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, accompanied by Minister of State, Bello Goronyo.
The ministerial delegation included technical directors, water experts, and senior government officials who conducted a thorough assessment of the recent floods that have displaced residents, submerged farmlands and homes, and disrupted economic activities across Maiduguri. Prof. Utsev emphasized the government’s commitment to a comprehensive overhaul of this vital infrastructure.
“The Alau Dam upgrade is non-negotiable,” he stated. “Any poor performance by contractors or officials involved will not go unpunished. Sanctions will be enforced for any delays or substandard work.” This underscores the government’s resolve to ensure that the upgrade is completed efficiently and effectively.
In addition to the dam upgrade, Prof. Utsev assured the public that coordinated efforts would be made to address the spread of waterborne diseases, particularly in collaboration with the state government. As part of the ministry’s immediate intervention, sanitation kits and water treatment facilities will be provided to displaced persons affected by the floods.
Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Zulum expressed gratitude to the ministers and their team for their prompt response during this critical period. He stressed the necessity of conducting a detailed study of the dam to assess its capacity, establish hydraulic structures, and improve flood forecasting systems.

Despite the centralization of these services in Lagos, provisions have been established to protect existing appointments. Individuals who successfully secured appointments at the Abuja embassy prior to the transition will retain their status, ensuring that previously booked sessions remain honored by the mission. Nevertheless, the embassy noted that schedule adjustments may occur for certain candidates, prompting affected applicants to monitor their email accounts regularly for official notifications regarding potential rescheduling updates.
The advisory explicitly notes that routine visa services are exclusively available at the Consulate General in Lagos, emphasizing that the U.S. Embassy in Abuja ceased processing routine visa applications on August 1, 2026. While previously scheduled appointments will be accommodated, dates are subject to movement. Additionally, United States authorities confirmed that applicants possessing unused and valid Machine Readable Visa (MRV) application fee receipts retain the flexibility to utilize them when scheduling new appointment slots at the Lagos consulate. Travelers are encouraged to consult the official US visa appointment platform continuously to access up-to-date guidance concerning service availability, designated appointment locations, and operating hours.
