In a proactive move to tackle pollution and environmental challenges in Maiduguri, Alhaji Balarabe Abbas, the Minister of Environment, announced the deployment of staff to the region. This announcement came during a visit to the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Friday, where Abbas led a delegation of heads from relevant agencies within the Ministry.
During his visit, Abbas emphasized the ministry’s preparedness to respond to the aftermath of the recent flood disaster caused by the Alau Dam. He acknowledged the severe impact of the flooding, which has resulted in significant pollution due to the influx of contaminants.
“There are cases of pollution once you have this type of flood, as there’s going to be a lot of pollutants that will come,” Abbas stated. He assured the governor that a specialized team would join local teams in Borno to tackle these pressing issues.
The Minister highlighted the commitment of the Ministry to bring all available resources to Borno for a comprehensive response to the disaster. “We are bringing all the resources of the ministry to Borno to stay and address the aftermath of this flood,” he reiterated, underscoring the importance of collaboration among various agencies.
Abbas commended Governor Zulum for his exemplary leadership in managing the catastrophic incident, expressing confidence that, with such reliable partnership, the environmental challenges would be effectively addressed.
The Minister recognized the devastating consequences of the flood, which has resulted in the tragic loss of lives, the displacement of thousands of families, and the destruction of homes, farmlands, and critical infrastructure. “This has caused much hardship on the government and people of Borno,” Abbas noted.
While mourning the loss, he stressed the need for coordinated actions to mitigate the effects of the disaster. The Ministry remains dedicated to supporting Borno in its recovery efforts, focusing on both immediate responses and long-term environmental sustainability.
“I have directed all agencies under the ministry to work closely with the relevant state agencies to provide the necessary technical and logistical support in addressing the challenges posed by this unfortunate event,” Abbas added.
In response, Governor Zulum expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s concern and called for sustainable solutions to ongoing issues, including the management of the dam and desertification affecting the state. He also raised the alarm about elephants destroying farmlands in certain local governments and sought the Minister’s support in addressing this pressing problem.
