Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has extended his heartfelt sympathy to Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum, and the residents of Borno following the severe floods that recently devastated Maiduguri, the state capital.
In a statement released on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, Governor Abiodun emphasized the grave humanitarian crisis triggered by the floods, urging all Nigerians to provide urgent support to the affected areas. He acknowledged that while natural disasters are often unavoidable, a swift response from both the Borno State government and the Federal Government is essential in alleviating the impact of such crises and offering immediate relief to those affected.
“I commiserate with my brother, Prof. Babagana Zulum, and the people of Borno State over the devastating flood in the state, which has resulted in a humanitarian crisis of high magnitude,” Abiodun stated. He reiterated that the government and people of Ogun State stand with Borno during this difficult time and will continue to keep them in their prayers.
Reports indicate that the floods have displaced at least 414,000 individuals and led to the tragic loss of at least 30 lives in Maiduguri. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) revealed that the flooding occurred after the Alau Dam overflowed due to heavy rainfall, marking the worst flooding in Maiduguri in 30 years, as confirmed by the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council and local residents of Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
NEMA spokesman Manzo Ezekiel further noted that the death toll has risen to 30, with nearly half a million people displaced as a result of the catastrophic flooding.
