Vice President Kashim Shettima has announced the Federal Government’s plan to integrate technology into Nigeria’s education system, aiming to enhance learning outcomes across the country. During a meeting with the World Bank Nigeria team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Shettima emphasized the government’s commitment to leveraging technology to address challenges in human capacity and resources.
Shettima highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to driving change in Nigeria by harnessing technological advancements to add value to the country, particularly in the education sector. He assured that the administration is ready to implement measures that would improve the quality of education in response to the evolving global technological landscape.
“Be rest assured that where there is a will, there is always a way. Change is a very painful percolation process,” Shettima stated. “But I know we will get out of this very soon and be on the path of sustained growth.”
Learning from Global Models
Shettima referenced India’s success in using KYAN smart class technology to teach students in rural areas. He suggested that similar technological solutions could be used to transform Nigeria’s educational system, especially in underserved communities.
“In India, Kyan technology is used to teach 50,000 pupils in rural and impoverished areas. I believe technology will help us upgrade our education system significantly,” Shettima said.
A Holistic Approach to Education Reform
The Vice President advocated for a comprehensive plan to reform the education sector, which would include improving infrastructure, enhancing teacher training, and incorporating advanced technology into classrooms. He stressed that for any transformation to be effective, the federal government needs collaboration from all stakeholders, including state governors.
“We need a comprehensive plan to address the gaps in our education system as quickly as possible. We must not allow these challenges to persist,” Shettima added. “The federal government is committed to making the necessary changes, but we need the cooperation of all stakeholders to drive this transformation forward.”
World Bank’s Commitment to Human Capital Development
Dr. Ndiame Diop, the World Bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, outlined the institution’s ongoing efforts to support Nigeria in improving governance, health, and education across the nation’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). During his presentation, titled “Opportunities for Prosperity and Equity in Nigeria’s Human Capital,” Diop highlighted the bank’s focus on governance, primary healthcare, and education reforms.
Diop further explained the World Bank’s projects, known as the “HOPE series,” which include Governance, HOPE Primary Health Care, and HOPE Basic Education initiatives. These projects are part of a broader push to reform governance, primary healthcare, and education with a strong focus on human capital development.
“The HOPE series interdependent operations are result-based financing (programme for results) primarily at the sub-national levels,” Diop noted.
Driving Education Reform Forward
The Federal Government’s initiative to integrate technology into education infrastructure underscores its broader agenda for national development. By addressing existing gaps and collaborating with international partners like the World Bank, Nigeria aims to create a future-ready education system capable of equipping its citizens with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
