A catastrophic flood disaster has displaced over 400,000 people in Maiduguri, Borno State, as hundreds of homes and properties were submerged under water. This tragic event, predicted and preventable, raises serious questions about the state government’s response and preparedness.

Warnings about the impending disaster reached Governor Babagana Umara Zulum’s administration days in advance. However, these warnings were downplayed, leading to dire consequences. On September 5, a high-level delegation, led by Alhaji Bukar Tijani, Secretary to the State Government, inspected the Alau Dam and assured the public that Maiduguri was safe and that measures were in place to prevent flooding.

Unfortunately, these assurances turned out to be false. The dam, which has a capacity of 112 million cubic meters, collapsed just days after the inspection, resulting in widespread destruction and displacement. This failure to act has drawn widespread criticism, with many citizens questioning why more was not done to prevent the disaster.

The flooding has left thousands of residents stranded and displaced, causing immense suffering. The current crisis is one of the worst the region has faced since the same dam collapsed 30 years ago. Residents were forced to flee their homes, and reports indicate that at least 30 people have died, with more than one million others affected.

Governor Zulum confirmed that the death toll could rise as efforts to document displaced individuals began, estimating that the number could reach nearly two million. Concerns about outbreaks of waterborne illnesses due to flooded sewage systems have also emerged. Governor Zulum expressed his worries, stating, “You can see how water completely flooded the area… that means waterborne diseases would be transmitted.”

Government Accountability

Despite prior assessments of the dam, the government’s response remained inadequate. The assurances provided to residents now seem misleading, with many grappling with the aftermath of the disaster. The gap between promises made and actual outcomes has deepened frustrations among the affected population.

Residents who relied on the government’s assurances now find themselves displaced and without adequate support. Early warning signs were available, yet the failure to respond with urgency reflects a troubling disregard for the safety of citizens.

Furthermore, recent data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicates that Borno State received N1.68 billion in ecological fund allocations over the past year, making it the second-highest recipient.
