Airstrikes from the air component of Operation Whirl Punch have successfully targeted terrorists in Niger State, specifically in the Shiroro Local Government Area. These airstrikes follow a fierce gun battle where over 100 terrorists engaged security operatives.
According to a statement released on Thursday by Group Captain Kabiru Ali, the Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the operatives involved in the firefight requested urgent air support during the attack.
The air operation took place on September 11, 2024. Group Captain Ali stated that the NAF conducted a precision air interdiction mission targeting terrorists in Bassa after receiving a request for assistance from friendly forces in the area. Upon arrival, NAF air assets observed the terrorists engaged in a violent clash with security personnel.
After confirming the positions of friendly troops, the Nigerian Air Force launched precision strikes against the terrorists. The operation was highly effective, neutralizing numerous terrorist fighters during successive attacks. By the end of the operation, 28 bodies of the terrorists had been recovered, with ongoing efforts to clear the area of additional bodies, weapons, and burnt motorcycles.
This successful operation highlights the Nigerian Air Force’s dedication to supporting other security agencies in the fight against crime throughout the country. Group Captain Ali emphasized that the NAF is committed to protecting Nigeria and assisting in combating banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality.
“Nigerians can be assured that NAF will continue to conduct air operations, both independently and in collaboration with surface forces, to eliminate all threats to the peace, prosperity, and security of our great nation,” he stated.
Shiroro Local Government Area has been a significant hotspot for banditry and terrorist activities. The military had previously withdrawn its forces from the area due to repeated attacks on troops by bandits. The recent airstrikes represent a renewed effort to restore security and stability to this troubled region.
