Niger Delta Youths Demand Reinstatement of Commandant Basil Igwebueze for Continued Security Progress....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Youths in the Niger Delta region are calling for the reinstatement of Basil Igwebueze, the Commandant of the Rivers State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Under the banner of the South-South Youths Initiative, these young leaders have appealed to NSCDC Commandant General Audi Ahmed, urging him to approve Igwebueze’s return to his position.

In a statement released on Thursday, Imeabe Oscar, the President of the initiative, highlighted Igwebueze’s exemplary professional conduct during his tenure. His leadership has been pivotal in maintaining security in the state, especially in combating illegal bunkering activities. The initiative noted that under his command, several illegal bunkering sites were dismantled, contributing to both regional peace and increased revenue for the federal government.

Oscar emphasized the importance of professionalism in security appointments, stating, “It should be on record that one of the criteria for appointing heads of security agencies is professionalism.” He praised Igwebueze for displaying diligence in securing vital government assets, underscoring the confidence that citizens now have in the NSCDC due to his leadership.

The youths expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision to redeploy Igwebueze at a time when his continued presence is crucial for consolidating the progress made in security. Oscar articulated the group’s concerns, stating, “We are not happy that at the time we need him most to consolidate on the good works he has been doing, he is being redeployed.”

The initiative acknowledged Commandant General Dr. Audi Ahmed for his efforts in appointing competent officers but insisted that reinstating Igwebueze would further strengthen security in Rivers State. “We are proud of him and we have every reason to pass a vote of confidence in him,” Oscar said. He noted that Igwebueze has consistently responded to emergencies and needs within the community, which underscores his commitment to serving the people.

This call for reinstatement reflects a broader desire among the Niger Delta youth for effective and reliable security leadership in their region. By advocating for Commandant Basil Igwebueze, they hope to ensure that the progress achieved in security and stability continues, benefitting both Rivers State and the South-South region as a whole.

An Ikeja Special Offences Court has fixed May 4, 2026, to rule on the admissibility of an extra-judicial statement made by a co-defendant in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the statement was made by Henry Omoile, who is standing trial alongside Emefiele, and the court will determine whether it was made voluntarily and is admissible as evidence.

Justice Rahman Oshodi fixed the date after both prosecution and defence counsel adopted their final written addresses during a trial-within-trial proceeding.

The hearing is focused on whether Omoile’s statement was obtained under lawful conditions or through coercion, as alleged by the defence.

Emefiele is facing a 19-count charge bordering on alleged gratification, corrupt demands, and abuse of office, linked to transactions worth about $4.5 billion and ₦2.8 billion.

Omoile is also facing a three-count charge over alleged unlawful acceptance of gifts relating to dealings with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Omoile’s counsel, Adeyinka Kotoye (SAN), argued that the statement should be rejected, claiming it was not made voluntarily and violated provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, including lack of video recording and concerns over coercion.

Emefiele’s lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), also urged the court to discount the statement, arguing that involuntary statements are inadmissible under the Evidence Act.

However, the prosecution, led by Director of Public Prosecutions Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), insisted the statement was properly obtained and made in the presence of Omoile’s lawyer.

He added that the content of the statement did not support claims of coercion and did not implicate Emefiele.

The court adjourned ruling to May 4, 2026, while also fixing June 26 and June 30, 2026, for continuation of the main trial.
