Warning of Petrol Price Hike Amid Dangote Refinery Production Start....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gilly-Harry, has issued a warning about a potential increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in the near future. This alert comes despite the recent commencement of petrol production by Dangote Refinery, which many hoped would help reduce current retail prices.

Gilly-Harry noted that the current price of petrol, which hovers around ₦600 per litre, is unsustainable. He pointed to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) struggling to maintain a consistent supply across the nation. “We’ve been raising alarms that the NNPC has been selling products at ₦590 per litre. But the question is, who is bearing the brunt? We can’t continue to play politics with everything; the reality needs to be addressed,” he stated during a segment on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.

The NNPCL has acknowledged its debt to petrol suppliers, which amounts to $6 billion. This debt is a significant factor contributing to the ongoing fuel queues at filling stations throughout the country in recent weeks.

Gilly-Harry urged Nigerians to prepare for prices dictated by market forces, emphasizing the importance of addressing the broader economic implications of fuel subsidies. “While we recognize that fuel subsidies exist globally and that oil and gas are natural blessings for Nigerians, we must weigh the benefits of subsidizing PMS against other pressing challenges, such as health,” he explained.

While acknowledging the transparency of the NNPCL in its operations, Gilly-Harry also expressed concern for retail outlet owners facing challenges in the current climate. He highlighted that PETROAN and other industry stakeholders are actively seeking innovative solutions to navigate this crisis.

“NNPCL is currently the only entity with the financial muscle to import PMS due to its access to dollars and a guaranteed market. However, this situation demands creativity and out-of-the-box thinking to ensure that Nigerians are adequately served,” Gilly-Harry noted.
