The Kano State Education Sector Joint Steering Committee recently held a significant two-day meeting in Kaduna, focusing on reviewing the progress of basic education initiatives in Kano State. This gathering brought together key stakeholders to evaluate the advancements made and tackle the challenges facing the education sector.

Alhaji Umar Doguwa, the State Commissioner of Education, addressed the participants, highlighting the state’s commitment to improving education following the declaration of a state of emergency by Governor Alhaji Abba Yusuf. Doguwa emphasized the importance of this bi-annual meeting in assessing the implementation of the 14-point education reform agenda and reviewing recommendations from the Kano Education Recovery Conference and Action Plan.

During the meeting, Doguwa shared that the committee would disseminate findings from the 2023 Annual Education Sector Performance Review, discuss the Haske Basic Education for Integrated Qur’anic Schools pilot program, and outline the next steps for the education sector.

According to a press statement from Balarabe Kiru, the Director of Public Enlightenment at the Ministry of Education, Kano State, several crucial steps have been planned. These include a comprehensive school enrolment drive, distribution of instructional materials across the 44 local government areas, and the reopening of boarding schools that were previously closed.

Doguwa also announced plans to provide maintenance allowances to schools and distribute necessary furniture and uniforms to create a supportive learning environment. He urged all participants to adhere to the commitments made during the meeting and assured them of ongoing government support.

Dr. Yusuf Mata, the State Commissioner for Higher Education, briefed journalists on the ministry’s efforts to enhance technical education in state tertiary institutions. He outlined a developed action plan aimed at upgrading and developing the technical education system to better support skills acquisition programs.

The meeting also included a thorough review of the education crisis response plan, covering various aspects such as access to quality education, addressing almajiri and alternative education systems, promoting girl-child education, and improving teacher development and curriculum resources.
