Zainab Ado Bayero, one of the daughters of the late Emir of Kano, has publicly refuted claims that she mismanaged funds provided to her family by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf. These allegations emerged after Zainab sought additional financial assistance, prompting criticism from some quarters.

In June 2024, Zainab, along with her mother and brother, faced eviction from their apartment in Lagos. The family had endured significant hardships following the death of their father, including a lack of stable housing and financial difficulties in continuing their education. In response to her plea for help, Governor Yusuf intervened, covering their accommodation expenses and related costs.

The governor’s spokesperson, Mr. Sanusi Bature, confirmed that he visited Lagos on June 25, 2024, to address the situation. During this visit, he met with Mr. Sunel Kumar, the General Manager of the apartment complex, who had threatened eviction due to unpaid rent.

Zainab expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Governor Yusuf, noting that his timely intervention helped them avoid eviction. However, two months later, she found herself needing more financial support to settle outstanding bills and assist her brother in returning to school.

This second appeal sparked mixed reactions, with some accusing Zainab of squandering the governor’s assistance. In an interview with Daily Trust, she vehemently denied these accusations, asserting that her intentions were not greedy or exploitative. Zainab explained, “I only came out to the media again because we needed more help to buy a house and get my brother back to school.”

Zainab emphasized that her family’s plight has persisted for over ten years, following her father’s death. She lamented the lack of support from her father’s family, stating that they have denied her and her siblings any inheritance. “I keep saying that it’s like people don’t understand what’s going on. Ever since my Dad died 10 years ago, his family denied us any part of his inheritance,” she shared.

Highlighting the continuous struggles her family faces, Zainab revealed, “Different people pleaded with my father’s sons to give us something tangible to start living – to buy us a home, to get us back to school, to give us something to do business, but they refused.” This lack of support has forced them to seek assistance from friends of their father, but the aid has often been temporary.

Zainab concluded by clarifying the assistance they received from the Kano State governor, stating, “I made it obvious that the Kano State governor paid for our hotel bill and gave us money.” Despite the challenges, she remains hopeful for a more stable future for her family, emphasizing that her plea for help stems from their ongoing struggle for stability and security.
