President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures among Nigerians and the military in addressing regional and global threats, as well as pressing social issues. His call to action comes amid growing criticism of his administration, particularly concerning the cost of governance following the purchase of a $100 million presidential jet.

During a speech at the graduation ceremony of Course 32 at the National Defence College in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, defended his government’s responsiveness to the needs and aspirations of citizens, especially in light of ongoing economic challenges.

Tinubu highlighted key initiatives undertaken by his administration to ease the economic hardships faced by Nigerians, pointing to the newly implemented ₦70,000 minimum wage for workers as a significant step forward. He stated, “Our country is grappling with numerous socio-economic challenges. As a government, we are attuned to the needs of our people, and we will continue to take proactive steps to support our citizens.”

In his address, Tinubu also underscored the administration’s commitment to combating crude oil theft in the Niger Delta, a crucial effort aimed at ensuring economic stability. He explained, “We are diligently working to combat crude oil theft and the associated issues in the Niger Delta region. Our border security forces and other agencies are tasked with addressing this threat swiftly to ensure economic stability.”

Additionally, Tinubu highlighted efforts to foster innovation in Nigeria’s mining sector, stating, “We are committed to developing a business model that promotes value addition in the mining sector, in collaboration with international partners, to harness the sector’s potential for national security and development.”

The President praised the military’s dedication under his leadership, assuring them of continued support and funding. “Under my leadership, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have made significant sacrifices and achieved considerable success in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and protecting the lives and properties of our citizens. I am committed to ensuring that the Nigerian military is well-funded and prepared for any challenges.”

Tinubu also stressed the importance of promoting democratic values across Africa, urging vigilance in the face of both regional and global threats. He concluded by encouraging the graduates to apply their newly acquired skills to tackle security challenges in their respective countries.

Addressing northern Christian leaders, Fani-Kayode claimed that during El-Rufai’s tenure, Christian communities faced violence, denial of developmental projects, and unequal allocation of resources. He asserted that Christian clergy members frequently endured insults and opposition regarding government policies, yet maintained a stance of prayer and non-violence.

Shifting his focus to the current administration, Fani-Kayode praised incumbent Governor Uba Sani—who previously served as a special adviser under El-Rufai—describing him as fair-minded and inclusive. According to Fani-Kayode, Sani had privately expressed deep concern over the previous administration’s approach toward religious groups in the state.

Furthermore, Fani-Kayode alleged that El-Rufai’s former deputy, Barnabas Bala Bantex, was also undermined and disrespected because of his faith during cabinet sessions. Concluding his remarks, Fani-Kayode emphasized that principles of fairness and spiritual duty must always transcend partisan politics.

Speaking during a television interview on Sunday, Oshiomhole addressed broader political engagement strategies aimed at strengthening ties between the Federal Government and the South-East. He noted that while Uzodimma holds a prominent position as secretary within the ruling party’s campaign structure, that role does not translate to an exclusive mandate for explaining government policies and milestones to the Igbo community.

Instead, Oshiomhole emphasized that all political leaders and governors representing the South-East share an equal duty to communicate effectively with their constituents and build strong bridges with the center.

“Please note, the fact that Hope Uzodimma is the secretary doesn’t mean he will be the one marketing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Igbo nation. I believe that every other governor in the South-East also has a role to play,” Oshiomhole stated.
