Captivated No More: 20 Medical Students and House Officer Released Without Ransom After Benue Kidnapping....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the safe release of 20 medical and dental students, along with a House Officer, who were kidnapped in Benue State. These students were on their way to attend the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FECAMDS) annual convention in Enugu State when they were ambushed by gunmen in the Otukpo area of Benue.

According to ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, the students were rescued on Friday, August 23, 2024, from Ntunkon forest in Benue State. Contrary to widespread reports, Adejobi clarified that no ransom was paid for their release. He stated, “Contrary to some tweets and unconfirmed stories that some money was paid, no kobo was paid to release them. They were actually rescued tactically and professionally. We commend the security agencies, locals, and ONSA for their commitment and resilience. Thanks to you all. More details soon.”

The students, hailing from the University of Maiduguri and the University of Jos, were traveling together when they fell into the hands of the kidnappers. The abductors had threatened to kill the students by Saturday if their families failed to raise the ransom.

The swift action of the security forces has been widely praised, particularly given the tension that followed the kidnappers’ threats. The Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, had earlier condemned the abduction and urged the security agencies to act swiftly, a call that was evidently heeded.

The Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students had released a list of some of the kidnapped students, including Boniface Tizhe, Thomas Yahaya, Gabriel Jita Iwev, Boniface Okon, and others. The list also included Dr. Luis Mmbamonyeukwu, a House Officer.

The successful rescue operation has brought relief to the students’ families and the larger community, highlighting the importance of effective collaboration between security agencies and local support in addressing security challenges in Nigeria.

Reports indicate that the ADC in Adamawa has been experiencing deep divisions, with a bloc loyal to Binani recently announcing a mass resignation following a stakeholders’ meeting held at the residence of Hon. Mijiyewa Umaru Kugama.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the group, drawn from all three senatorial districts in the state, accused the party leadership of weakening internal democracy and violating key principles guiding party operations.

According to a viral video circulating online, the former Ogun State governor confirmed the development while addressing his supporters from a branded campaign bus associated with the OGD/PBAT Movement.

He stated that although they were present for the APC Ogun East caucus meeting, they were denied access, describing any resolutions taken at the gathering as invalid.

The invitation for the emergency stakeholders’ meeting, issued by party leaders in Ijebu Ode, reportedly included deputy governors, serving and former local government chairmen, councillors, and past and present lawmakers at both state and federal levels.

In a related development, Daniel recently referred to his successor, Ibikunle Amosun, as an “enfant terrible successor” during a church service marking his 70th birthday in Sagamu, where Amosun was also in attendance.

Both politicians were once close allies before a political fallout that began ahead of the 2007 governorship election, when Amosun challenged Daniel’s re-election bid. The rivalry intensified further in the 2011 political cycle, deepening the divide between the two former governors.

Speaking at the event, Daniel remarked that Amosun’s early political ambition played a role in their fallout during his time in office.
