Nigeria on High Alert as River Niger Water Levels Rise: NIHSA Issues Urgent Warning
Nigeria on High Alert as River Niger Water Levels Rise: NIHSA Issues Urgent Warning....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a crucial warning regarding the escalating water levels of the River Niger, as of August 22, 2024. This alert follows a report from the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey, Niger Republic, highlighting that upstream activities in Niger and Mali have significantly contributed to the situation.
NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, confirmed in a statement released on Friday that, “Flood waters from these two countries are expected to move gradually into Nigeria through Kebbi State.” The rising water levels pose a serious risk to communities along the River Niger system, prompting urgent preparations.
Dam operators at Kainji and Jebba on the River Niger have been notified and are fully equipped to handle the situation. Mohammed reassured the public by stating, “It is important to note that as of August 22, 2024, the dams are not spilling water from their reservoirs.” This indicates that, while the situation is being closely monitored, there is no immediate danger of dam overflow.
NIHSA has advised states and communities along the River Niger to remain vigilant as the floodwaters are expected to reach their peak towards the end of August and into September. The agency emphasized the importance of preparedness, urging local governments and residents to take necessary precautions.
NIHSA will continue to monitor the flood situation across the country and provide regular updates to the public. The agency’s proactive approach aims to mitigate the potential impact of the rising water levels, ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities.
