Nasarawa’s Erosion Nightmare: Unguwar Nungu On The Brink Of DestructionResidents of Unguwar Nungu, a community in Lafia, Nasarawa State, have expressed grave concern over the worsening gully erosion threatening their land, urgently calling on the state government to take immediate action to save their community from further devastation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Investigations by DAILY POST revealed that the advancing erosion has forced many residents to flee their homes.

The situation has been aggravated by continuous heavy rainfall, which has left homes and infrastructure at high risk of flooding and collapse.

Yusuf Agalu, a resident of Unguwar Nungu, highlighted the dire conditions, stating that each rainfall brings severe flooding that damages property and poses health risks.

“Many people have abandoned their homes to stay with relatives because we can’t sleep at night when it rains. The fear of our buildings collapsing due to the gully erosion is constantly on our minds,” Agalu explained.

He further noted that the community’s existing water channels, instead of mitigating the problem, have worsened the flooding due to blockages caused by the erosion.

Agalu urged the Nasarawa State Government to build proper drainage systems and involve local residents in the planning and maintenance efforts.

Another resident, Abdullahi Lamino, echoed these concerns, urging the government to act swiftly to safeguard the community’s safety and livelihoods.

“The erosion intensifies flooding during the rainy season and creates hazardous conditions for residents. We urgently need government support and intervention to address this crisis,” Lamino stressed.

Debbie Ekere, speaking to DAILY POST, recounted her frustration, recalling how she once told her father and brother to let the water flow through their rooms until morning.

The community head, Abubakar Ismaila, voiced his concerns about the long-term impact of the erosion, noting that politicians had previously promised to address the issue, but no significant action had been taken.

“For years, residents of Unguwar Nungu have suffered due to erosion. We’ve made several efforts, and politicians have promised to construct drainage systems for us, but nothing has been done to this day,” Ismaila lamented.

In response, Peter Ahemba, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Public Affairs, acknowledged the erosion challenges in Lafia, explaining that the delay in addressing the issue was due to ongoing road construction and rehabilitation in the state capital.

“We understand the plight of residents in Lafia who are currently facing erosion issues. We are aware of the situation, but we can’t address it now because of the ongoing road construction and rehabilitation,” Ahemba said.

He assured residents that the government is committed to their welfare and urged them to remain hopeful, stating that resolving the issue is a priority for the administration

The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has ordered all public primary and secondary school teachers in Abuja to commence an indefinite strike from Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The union also directed parents and guardians to keep their children at home until further notice, citing unresolved welfare concerns and what it described as government inaction.

This followed a communiqué issued after an emergency SWEC meeting held in Gwagwalada, Abuja, over the weekend and signed by the state leadership of the union.

Teachers were instructed to fully comply with the strike directive and await further instructions from the union leadership, as the industrial action remains in force until their demands are addressed.

According to the communiqué, the strike became necessary after the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum earlier issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, which elapsed without a satisfactory response.

The union recalled that although previous interventions led to the suspension of an earlier strike, several key issues affecting teachers’ welfare were still unresolved.

It also expressed concern that a committee set up to address outstanding entitlements submitted its report in August 2025, but the findings have not been made public or implemented.

While acknowledging the payment of the new minimum wage and some salary arrears, the union insisted that major concerns remain unattended.

The NUT further demanded reforms in promotion processes and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise.

After what it described as unsuccessful engagements and expired deadlines, the union declared that all teachers in the FCT will remain on strike indefinitely until their demands are met.
