The Nigerian federal government has revealed ongoing discussions and negotiations concerning the reopening of land borders with Benin and Niger Republics. The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, shared this information with journalists following the inauguration of the National Single Window Project at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
Adeniyi stated that high-level discussions are underway between the countries to address the issues that led to the initial closure of the borders, ensuring that they do not recur if the borders are reopened.
He remarked, “Consultations are already in progress, some at very high levels. Over the last weekend, I engaged with my counterparts in Benin Republic. Earlier, I visited our borders with Niger Republic. We are examining the root causes of the border closure and working to prevent their recurrence. I am pleased to report that we are making steady progress.”
Adeniyi emphasized that Customs would continue to seek guidance from President Bola Tinubu and ensure border security and efficiency with the implementation of the Single Window system at ports and border stations.
Recalling that the borders were closed in 2019 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, the government cited reasons such as promoting local food production and combating smuggling and associated corruption.
