Flood Devastation in Bauchi State: 24 Lives Lost and Over N22 Billion in Damages....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Bauchi State Executive Council has reported a tragic toll from the ongoing floods that have affected 16 local government areas. So far, 24 people have lost their lives, and property damages are estimated at over N22 billion.

In a meeting on Monday, the council announced the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee to assess the damages caused by these persistent floods. Hajara Wanka, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, shared the grim details with reporters, revealing that in addition to the fatalities, 163 individuals have been injured and 60 culverts have been washed away. The floods have also cut off 12 major roads, destroyed 178 electric poles, and severely impacted 11,183 livestock and 122,330 households, leading to the destruction of 52,000 houses.

Wanka noted that in response to the disaster, victims were temporarily housed in primary schools before reuniting with relatives, as no Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps were opened.

To address the damage, the state government has approved the release of funds aimed at rehabilitating affected structures, including culverts, access roads, schools, and public buildings. The establishment of the assessment committee aligns with a directive from the Federal Government, seeking to evaluate the extent of the disaster, which has also affected several other states across the nation.

Chaired by Aminu Hammayo, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, the committee will include relevant commissioners and will be monitored by Ibrahim Kashim, the Secretary to the State Government.

In an effort to mitigate future flood risks, Dallami Kawule, the Commissioner for Housing and Environment, announced plans to take action against structures built on waterways. This initiative aims to prevent future flooding, as assessments have indicated that blocked waterways have worsened the flooding situation.

Furthermore, Jamila Ɗahiru, the Commissioner for Education, revealed that her ministry has secured approval for the renovation and remodeling of the state Education Resource Center. This project will merge with the newly commissioned Zainab Bulkachuwa ICT Center, creating a world-class learning facility to enhance education in the state.
