The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has officially requested a directive for debt recovery from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). This announcement was made by the NDPHC’s managing director, Jennifer Adighije, during her first official working visit to the NERC in Abuja, where she introduced the new management team.

Adighije revealed that the company is currently burdened by significant debt, prompting its board chairman, Vice President Kashim Shettima, to direct the management to recover outstanding payments. The Vice President has also asked for a detailed report on the recovery efforts to be presented within two weeks.

“Our rising debt exposure, among other issues, were very key subjects of discussion, which is now threatening the survival of the company,” Adighije stated. She emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that aggressive action is needed to address the company’s financial challenges.

As the firm with the largest generation capacity in Nigeria, the NDPHC faces mounting pressures. Adighije acknowledged that the success of the company’s recovery efforts heavily depends on its collaboration with NERC. She requested the support of NERC’s chairman, Engr. Sanusi Garba, to expedite internal processes to achieve positive results.

“We appeal to you to expedite your internal processes to ensure that we deliver positive results back to the chairman of the board,” she urged. Adighije also proposed the establishment of a technical working committee to address ongoing issues and expedite reconciliations.

In her address, Adighije reaffirmed her commitment to working alongside NERC to enhance the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). She expressed gratitude for the cooperation received from the commission and highlighted the management team’s readiness to align fully with NERC’s directives.

Garba responded positively, assuring that the Commission would provide all necessary support while adhering to regulations. He recognized the significant challenges facing NDPHC and emphasized the need for strategic direction to ensure effective delivery of services.

“We understand that the challenges are quite significant. There is probably a need for more focus on strategic direction for the organization,” he stated.
