Bauchi Cleric Denies Threatening First Lady Remi Tinubu, Calls Allegations A Smear Campaign
Controversial Bauchi-based Islamic cleric, Idris Abdul’aziz, has recently addressed the accusations leveled against him regarding threats made towards Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu. This comes weeks after he sparked controversy with remarks aimed at the President’s wife……..READ ALSO
In February, Abdul’aziz found himself in the midst of a storm when a video surfaced showing him allegedly threatening Mrs. Tinubu due to her Christian faith. He was also reported to have criticized the Muslim-Muslim ticket that brought President Bola Tinubu and his Vice, Kashim Shettima, into power.
Despite the backlash, Mrs. Tinubu remained steadfast, stating that, at 64 years old, she harbored no fear of death.
During Mrs. Tinubu’s visit to Bauchi in March to inaugurate various projects, Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed condemned the threats against her, labeling them as intolerable. He apologized to Mrs. Tinubu and assured her of her safety in the state, promising to take action against those responsible for the threats.
However, Abdul’aziz, in his first public appearance following a self-imposed exile, refuted the allegations against him. He emphasized that he has no association with the President’s wife and has never commented on her or her husband. Abdul’aziz dismissed the accusations as part of a malicious smear campaign orchestrated to tarnish his reputation.
Addressing the audience at the closing of this year’s Ramadan commentary of the Holy Qur’an in Bauchi, Abdul’aziz clarified his stance: “I have no business with her whatsoever and I don’t even know her correct name. I have never commented on her husband, the president, let alone her. I don’t have anything to do with the wife of the president. It was a smearing campaign orchestrated from Bauchi to cause disaffection between me and the wife of the president. Two groups are responsible for this.”
He challenged those behind the allegations to provide concrete evidence, such as authentic video or audio recordings, to support their claims of him issuing threats against Mrs. Tinubu.
