The death toll from a stampede at an almsgiving Zakat event in Bauchi State has risen to seven, with the Bauchi State Police Command confirming three additional fatalities…….READ ALSO
The stampede occurred at the Shafa Holdings Company Plc headquarters along Jos Road on Sunday morning, claiming the lives of four women initially. The gathering was for the distribution of Zakaat items by a philanthropist based in Bauchi.
According to reports, the distribution started smoothly but turned chaotic as restlessness among the crowd led to a struggle to enter the premises, resulting in the tragic incident.
Providing an update on the situation, SP Ahmed Wakili, the spokesman for the Bauchi State Police Command, disclosed that two more women passed away at the Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), while the third woman died at home.
The casualties include individuals of various ages and backgrounds, including teenagers and adults, underscoring the tragic impact of the stampede on the community.
The victims have been identified as Aisha Usman (13), Sahura Abubakar (55), Aisha Ibrahim Abubakar (43), Kobi Street Bauchi; Khadija Isah (8), Karofi Bauchi; Maryam Suleiman (20), Kandahar Bauchi; Maryam Shuibu (16), Gwang Gwan Gwan Bauchi; and Hassana Saidu (53), Dutsen Tanshi Bauchi.
SP Wakili assured the public that the police command would provide further details as they become available, urging for calm and cooperation during the investigation into the tragic incident.
