Following directives from the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Edo State Council of the union has picketed the State Secretariat of the Labour Party (LP) over alleged financial impropriety and contempt of court by the National Chairman, Julius Abure……..CONTINUE READING

Led by Suleiman Abubakar, the State Vice Chairman of NLC, union members staged the picketing of the party’s office in Benin City, accusing Abure of running the party like a personal business.

Abubakar emphasized that the Labour Party belongs to the NLC and should be inclusive in decision-making processes. He warned against Abure’s attempt to unilaterally impose a candidate for the next national chairman of the party.

According to Abubakar, the NLC’s action was in line with directives from its political commission, aimed at addressing issues of internal governance within the Labour Party.

In response, the Publicity Secretary of the LP in Edo State, Sam Uroupa, criticized the NLC for allegedly neglecting its primary responsibility of advocating for workers’ welfare. Uroupa accused the NLC of diverting its attention from pressing issues affecting workers, such as low wages and rising living costs, to engage in political skirmishes with a party not in government.

The exchange highlights the tensions between the NLC and the LP, with the former accusing the latter’s leadership of misconduct and the latter criticizing the NLC for what it perceives as a diversion from its core mandate.

Utomi highlighted that other aspirants, including Chibuike Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-deen, had rejected the primary results and lodged complaints. Consequently, Utomi described Obi’s exit as a strategic and intelligent decision.

Regarding the broader political landscape, Utomi remarked:

  • While polling indicated that Obi would have won within the ADC, the prospect of the party leadership permitting a transparent process was doubtful.

  • He argued that the general management of primary processes across the political spectrum renders them a “complete farce”.
