Nigerians Brace for Potential N5,000 Per Litre Petrol Price Amid Rising Fuel Costs....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Concerns are mounting across Nigeria as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warns that petrol prices could soar to N5,000 per litre. This alarming prediction follows recent increases in fuel prices at filling stations owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), where rates have already exceeded N850 per litre nationwide.

The increase in fuel prices comes as a direct result of a directive from the NNPC management, which raised the price from N568 to N855. Benson Upah, spokesperson for the NLC, expressed his apprehension during an interview with Daily Trust, highlighting that this escalation contradicts the previous agreements made between the union and the federal government.

Upah stated, “The mood is one of anger. Virtually every Nigerian is angry, except for that small percentage that benefits from the state.” He emphasized that the rising fuel costs are not just a labour issue but a national concern affecting every citizen.

Further expressing the union’s disappointment, Upah noted that the recent price hikes felt like a betrayal of trust. He recounted a negotiation with the President, where labour leaders rejected an offer that would have kept the price of petrol low in exchange for a lump sum payment. “What would be the effect of this on the ordinary person?” he questioned, pointing out that the proposal did not consider the welfare of the average Nigerian.

Since the removal of the fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, Nigerians have faced a staggering increase in the cost of living. Essential sectors like education, transportation, and food have seen prices rise by 500%. The NLC spokesperson stated, “Coming to terms with these hikes is not easy. Just as Nigerians were trying to adjust, another shock has been introduced.”

With uncertainty looming, Upah warned that the worst may not yet be over. He highlighted the lack of clarity regarding the future of fuel prices, saying, “What this signals is that Nigerians have not seen the end yet. We may end up paying nothing less than N5,000 per litre for fuel in this country.”

As discussions continue within the NLC regarding the best course of action, the mood among the populace remains tense, reflecting a widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the fuel crisis. The organization plans to convene meetings to strategize and determine how best to advocate for the interests of Nigerians amid these rising costs.
