Shocking Arrest: DSS Detains Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero at Airport
Shocking Arrest: DSS Detains Nigeria Labour Congress President Joe Ajaero at Airport....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) under controversial circumstances. His arrest occurred on Monday morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, as he was preparing to board a flight to the United Kingdom for an official assignment.
According to reports from Vanguard, Ajaero was on his way to attend a conference of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the UK when he was taken into custody by the secret police. Sources indicated that he has since been handed over to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) for further questioning.
Ajaero had previously requested that a police invitation, which also involved NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja, be rescheduled. Initially set for September 5, 2024, Ajaero sought to move the date to September 25, 2024, citing other engagements outside Abuja.
His counsel, Femi Falana (SAN), who accompanied Ajaero to the police headquarters for his first appearance on August 29, confirmed that the labour leaders were considering postponing the interrogation due to scheduling conflicts. Falana stated, “We wrote for another date as Comrade Joe Ajaero has an engagement outside Abuja today.”
The police had summoned Ajaero and Ugboaja to answer questions related to serious allegations, including terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, criminal conspiracy, and treasonable felony. However, SaharaReporters reported that during their initial meeting with the Intelligence Response Team, the questions posed to Ajaero were surprisingly brief.
Maxwell Opara, Deputy Lead Counsel for Ajaero, revealed that upon arrival at the facility, the police clarified that the meeting was simply to inquire about a tenant occupying a shop within the Labour Secretariat. Opara remarked, “They just want to ask him a few questions in respect to the tenant that is here. That doesn’t mean that we are going to relent because we don’t know what is going to come up next.”
Amidst these developments, Opara called for the release of protesters detained during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests. He emphasized, “They have been there for more than what is requested by law. It is either they release them or take them to court.”
