During a meeting with foreign agencies, the Minister for Power, Adebayo Adelabu, revealed the government’s plans to invest in renewable energy infrastructure to enhance electricity generation nationwide.
According to Adelabu’s media aide, Bolaji Tunji, the minister emphasized the importance of renewable power plants in achieving gradual enhancements in the country’s power supply.
Renewable power plants harness energy from sources like solar, wind, water, or geothermal energy, enabling electricity generation without relying on traditional fossil fuels such as coal, oil, or natural gas.
Adelabu pledged to prioritize the Rural Electrification Agency’s efforts to serve rural communities lacking adequate access to power, particularly those economically unattractive to distribution companies.
In pursuit of this goal, the minister outlined plans to develop small hydropower plants along the country’s numerous small dams, with a focus on hybrid solutions that incorporate solar energy during periods of low water levels.
Furthermore, Adelabu revealed considerations for solar and wind power options, tailored to suit the specific energy needs of different regions across Nigeria.
Addressing the financial challenges plaguing the power sector, the minister underscored the importance of resolving liquidity issues and ensuring cost-recovery mechanisms to attract investment and maintain infrastructure.
Adelabu’s briefing received positive feedback from various development partners, including representatives from international organizations and financial institutions, who expressed their commitment to supporting Nigeria’s efforts to overcome obstacles in the power sector.
