This move comes in response to the Federal Government’s failure to uphold the 16-point agreement reached with organized labour on October 2, 2023. Leaders of the NLC and TUC have expressed deep frustration over the government’s perceived indifference to the widespread suffering and hardship experienced by the Nigerian populace, exacerbated by the non-implementation of the agreed terms.

The 14-day notice serves as a final appeal to the government to address the grievances of the labour sector and fulfill its commitments to ensure industrial peace and economic stability.

The October 2 agreement was primarily focused on mitigating the significant suffering caused by the IMF/World Bank-induced hike in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the devaluation of the naira. These policies have resulted in dire economic consequences for the masses and workers of Nigeria, as predicted by the unions.

In a joint statement, the NLC and TUC lamented the necessity of resorting to such measures but emphasized that the persistent neglect of the welfare of citizens and Nigerian workers, coupled with the ongoing hardship, has left them with no alternative.

Effective February 9th, the unions have set the deadline for the Federal Government to honor its part of the agreement within 14 days. Failure to do so may result in nationwide industrial action, significantly impacting various sectors of the economy.

In an interview with ARISE Television, Utomi explained that remaining in the ADC would have left Obi “trapped,” noting the controversial nature of that party’s presidential primary. Utomi highlighted that other aspirants, including Chibuike Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-deen, had rejected the primary results and lodged complaints. Consequently, Utomi described Obi’s exit as a strategic and intelligent decision.

Regarding the broader political landscape, Utomi remarked:

  • While polling indicated that Obi would have won within the ADC, the prospect of the party leadership permitting a transparent process was doubtful.

  • He argued that the general management of primary processes across the political spectrum renders them a “complete farce”.

  • He further criticized these events as “make-believe” democratic processes, where candidates are often imposed upon the party.
