The group reiterated its stance based on the verdict issued by the Appeal Court in Abuja on October 13, 2022, which exonerated Kanu of all charges leveled against him by the Federal Government.
Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services since 2021, following his arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria.
Despite the Supreme Court’s decision on December 15, 2023, to permit his trial for terrorism charges brought against him by the Federal Government, the case was remanded back to the High Court, with hearings scheduled to commence on February 8, 2024.
However, the Federal Government failed to appear in court on the specified date, resulting in the adjournment of the case.
In a statement issued on Thursday, IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, expressed disappointment, stating, “Regrettably, the same Federal Government prosecuting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is refusing to attend the Abuja High Court hearing on February 8, 2024.”
The group asserted its allegiance to the ruling of the Appeal Court, which barred any further trial of Kanu in Nigerian courts. They accused the Federal Government of lacking a legitimate case against him.
IPOB condemned the government’s utilization of legal mechanisms to unlawfully detain and persecute Kanu, asserting that such actions tarnish Nigeria’s reputation both domestically and internationally.
Furthermore, the pro-Biafran group called upon President Bola Tinubu to unconditionally release Kanu, citing self-determination as a lawful right both domestically and internationally.
“We are committed to preserving the safety of Biafrans from violent insurgents. The liberation of Biafra is a divine mission that neither former President Muhammadu Buhari nor anyone else can obstruct,” the group declared, emphasizing its unwavering dedication to the cause of Biafran independence.
